During slavery there were three types of Gospel music: work songs, jubilees and social Gospel. music always had a message of hope and freedom. That message is as strong today as it was, some 90 years ago, when gospel begun, taking its roots in the more freewheeling forms of religious devotion. Called ‘holy rollers’ by other denominations, gospel singers called church members to "testify," speak or sing about their faith and experience.
Gospel sheds an undeniable influence on R&B and rock and roll; the method, dynamics and power behind the songs are different, but the message is delivered each and every time.
The Café of the Gate of Salvation currently numbers 35 members, some of whom have sung with the choir since its inception. There’ve been changes; our founder, Tony Backhouse, left the choir after our NZ tour in 2007 and now, under the musical directorship of Dynes Austin and assistant Linda Calgaro, we continue to thrive. |
